Things to see & do

Beaches & the Coast Path

You are completely spoilt for choice here, there are many beaches within a 30 minute drive of the site ;

  • Bantham – great for body boarding and surfing, food trucks in high season 

  • Bigbury – good all-rounder beach, takeaway café, take the sea tractor to visit the famous Burgh Island

  • South Milton Sands – good for paddle boarding and swimming

  • Hope Cove - beach & coastal walks

  • Paignton and Torbay have many lovely beaches – good if you also want the vibrancy of arcades and more choice of places to eat. 

  • Slapton and Torcross – truly stunning scenery, take the 3 mile drive along the beach on the coastal road and discover how the area was evacuated for Operation Tiger in WW2. 

 

  • Blackpool Sands – good all rounder beach, on site café

Towns to visit

If you’re looking for a nice place to shop or enjoy a relaxing coffee by the water then the following towns are worth a visit:

 

  • Totnes

  • Dartmouth

  • Salcombe

  • Kingsbridge

 

Or if you are heading inland check out:

  • Ashburton; lots of unique places to discover here including trendy cafes and antique shops.

Within 10 minutes

  • Circular routes to walk or cycle from the site along the Devon Lanes – all hilly in parts! – see the maps.
     

  • Moor Gate & Site near Ivybridge Equestrian are both good places to access the most Southern edge of Dartmoor for stunning walks. Both places are unmarked and have limited parking so refer to maps before travelling. 
     

  • South Brent Village with its independent shops and cafes is a place away from the hustle and bustle with beautiful river walks leading to Woodland Trust land.
     

  • Totnes; a vibrant market town with regular local markets in the Market Square. See the Visit Totnes website for local information.

Family Fun

  • Woodlands, family theme park, 20 minute drive.

 

  • Paignton Zoo, a fantastic day out for the entire family, 20 minutes drive.

 

  • Dartmoor Zoo , a smaller zoo with lots of big cats, 25 minutes drive

 

  • Haldon Forest,  Fantastic place for bike tracks, forest walks, far reaching views of Devon , Go Ape high ropes, bike and segway hire, picnic spots and playgrounds. (30 minutes drive)

 

Rainy Days

 

  • Exeter (30 minutes away); Exeter Cathedral, The RAMM (museum free entry), boasting a great vibe with lots of shops and places to eat in this university city. 

 

  • China Blue in Totnes ( paint your own clay, shop and café) 5 minutes drive. 

  • Endsleigh Garden Centre (12 minutes drive) An easy place to while away a few hours with its many different departments, cafes and soft play area. 

Dartmoor

​If you want to enjoy stunning scenery then Dartmoor National Park is where you should head:

 

  • A visit to Princetown in the heart of Dartmoor, with a fabulous visitor centre, cafes and the famous Dartmoor Prison Museum which is not to be missed. A good place to start a walk or bike ride. 

  • Or visit the iconic Hay Tor and Hound Tor, great for walking and views

  • A visit to Postbridge is a great spot for a paddle and a photo opportunity

National Trust & English Heritage

We are spoilt to have so many different and interesting National Trust Properties here in Devon, take a look at the map for inspiration.

  • Totnes Castle

  • Dartmouth Castle

  • Berry Pomeroy Castle

Great places to eat

  • The Old Inn, Morleigh - great for steak, 10 minutes

  • The Grange Restaurant, Buckfast Abbey  - great any time but especially for Sunday Carvery, 10 minutes

  • The Dartmoor Lodge, Ashburton , Carvery, 10 minutes

  • Big Fish Little Fish, South Brent , takeaway Fish and chips, 5 minutes drive

  • Silver Grill, Totnes Fish & chips, less than 10 minutes drive

  • Cafe Mumbai, Totnes Indian food, eat in and takeaway, 5 minutes

  • Balti King, Totnes Indian Food , eat in and takeaway

  • Meghna Tandoori , Ivybridge, Indian food takeaway

  • Nandon, Ivybridge ,Indian eat in or takeaway

  • Avon Inn, pub food and child friendly garden 1 mile 

  • Turtley Corn Mill, pub food, 2 miles, lovely garden area with ducks.
